The pins fit
The implement may still exceed the tractor’s lift or power limits, sit too close to the tires, or create unsafe front-to-rear balance.
An implement is not compatible merely because its pins fit the lift arms or its driveline slides onto the PTO stub.

A rotary cutter, tiller, mower or post-hole digger can be the correct size for a property and still be a poor match for the tractor. PTO speed, shaft arrangement, available PTO power, hitch geometry, lift capacity and driveline movement all have to work together. One adapter cannot make the other questions disappear.
Two connections, several limits
The three-point hitch locates a mounted implement behind the tractor and raises or lowers it. The PTO stub drives an implement gearbox through a telescoping shaft. A drawn implement may use the drawbar rather than the three-point hitch while still taking power from the PTO. Hydraulics may add another connection for cylinders or motors.
Treat each connection separately. A correct hitch category does not confirm PTO speed. Adequate engine horsepower does not prove adequate PTO horsepower. A high lift figure does not guarantee that a long implement will clear the tires or remain stable when raised.
The six-part match
540, 540E and 1000 rpm
Standard 540 operation reaches 540 rpm at the PTO at the engine speed specified by the tractor manufacturer. On a tractor equipped with 540E, the same 540 shaft speed is achieved at a lower engine speed. Deere describes the economy setting for lighter loads, where full engine power is not required. It is not a way to operate a 1000 rpm implement.
A tractor with selectable 540 and 1000 rpm may require the PTO stub to be reversed or changed before the speed selector can move. Follow that machine’s manual. The cutter manual used in this research is unambiguous about the consequence: a cutter designed for 540 rpm must not be driven from a PTO set to 1000 rpm.

Three incomplete matches

A driveline can slide onto the stub and still be rated for the wrong PTO speed, have inadequate guard clearance or be the wrong working length.

Compare real tractor records
The Ford 1100 combines a Category I hitch with a 540 rpm transmission-driven PTO. TheInternational Harvester 1026 record lists a Category II hitch and 1000 rpm rear PTO. The Case IH 2120 lists a Category I/II hitch arrangement with a 540 rpm independent PTO.
A newer John Deere 5075E record shows another kind of variation: Category II convertible to Category I, and PTO equipment that differs by transmission. These are useful comparisons, but the operator’s manual for the exact tractor and implement remains the authority for coupling and operation.
