International Harvester 1066 Overview

International Harvester built the 1066 from 1971 through 1976 around the turbocharged DT-414 six-cylinder diesel. Gear-drive tractors used an 8-forward/4-reverse transmission, with the Torque Amplifier adding an underdrive ratio for 16 forward and 8 reverse speeds.
The 1066 cannot be represented accurately by one tested horsepower number. Nebraska Test 1081 covers an early 2,400-rpm gear/Torque Amplifier tractor, Test 1083 covers the separately identified Hydro 1066, and Test 1124 covers a later 2,600-rpm 16-speed tractor at chassis serial 2610154U023000 and above.
Find the tractor number on the left side of the clutch or hydrostatic-drive housing and the DT-414 engine number on the left side of the crankcase before choosing parts or service literature. The linked free operator and parts PDFs are excerpts, not complete manuals or catalogs.
International Harvester 1066 Quick Answers
- Production years and serial startsThe International Harvester 1066 was produced from 1971 through 1976. Published year-start numbers run from 7101 for 1971 to 56672 for 1976, with the tractor plate on the left clutch or hydrostatic-drive housing.
- EngineThe 1066 uses International Harvester's turbocharged DT-414: a 414 cu in six-cylinder diesel with a 4.30 x 4.75 in bore and stroke, seven main bearings, wet sleeves, and 1-5-3-6-2-4 firing order.
- Early tested PTO powerNebraska Test 1081 recorded 116.23 PTO hp at the early tractor's 2,400-rpm rated engine speed and 112.18 hp at standard 1,000 PTO rpm.
- Later tested PTO powerNebraska Test 1124 recorded 125.68 PTO hp at 2,601 engine rpm for the later 16-speed tractor at chassis serial 2610154U023000 and above; it recorded 119.20 hp at standard PTO speed.
- Hydro 1066 distinctionNebraska Test 1083 belongs to the separately identified Hydro 1066. Nebraska Test 1083's 113.58 PTO hp and 84.88 drawbar hp results should not be blended into the gear-drive tractor's figures.
- Engine oil and coolantThe reviewed shop-manual table gives the 1066 an 18 US qt crankcase and a 26 US qt cooling system. The former 25-qt coolant value came from the adjacent 826 diesel column and has been corrected.
- Transmission and rear-frame capacityThe shop-manual table lists approximately 24 US gal for the standard transmission and differential or 27 US gal for hydrostatic drive. Those capacities belong to different configurations.
- Transmission choicesGear drive provides 8 forward and 4 reverse speeds. The Torque Amplifier adds a shift-on-the-move underdrive for 16 forward and 8 reverse ratios; Hydro 1066 uses continuously variable hydrostatic drive.
- PTO and hitchThe 1066 has an independent rear PTO with 540 and 1,000 rpm shafts and a Category III/II three-point hitch. Published lift at 24 inches is 5,600 lb.
- Which documents are complete? The free operator PDF is an eight-page sample, the free service PDF is a 22-page excerpt, and the TC-167 parts PDF is a 27-page partial catalog. Use them for visible pages only, not as complete manuals.
Engine and Power
The turbocharged DT-414 is a 414 cu in six-cylinder with wet sleeves and seven main bearings. Power cards remain tied to Tests 1081, 1083, or 1124 because transmission, serial scope, and rated engine speed materially changed the results.

Manuals and Documents
The free Jensales operator PDF is an eight-page sample, the service PDF is a 22-page excerpt, and the TC-167 parts PDF is a 27-page partial catalog. They are labelled by the pages actually reviewed rather than presented as complete publications.
Nebraska Tests 1081, 1083, and 1124 remain separate because they cover early gear/Torque Amplifier, Hydro, and later serial-scoped 16-speed tractors. The official annual summaries supply the configuration-labelled performance values shown above.

Parts Checks Before Ordering
Do not order IH 1066 parts from the model name alone. Match the part to the tractor's model code, serial range, engine, transmission, PTO setup, and build year before choosing service parts.
Filters, fluids, belts, electrical components, clutch and PTO parts, and hydraulic parts can vary by configuration. Exact part numbers require a parts catalog, manual, or trusted supplier reference before they become recommendations.
Accuracy Note
Tractor specifications can vary by year, region, factory configuration, installed equipment, and later repairs. Match serial range, engine, transmission, PTO setup, and model code before ordering parts or doing service work.
